Dog giving its paw to its owner inside a Reliable Campers dog-friendly van

    Dog-Friendly Camper Van Conversions

Safe, comfortable adventure for you and your four-legged co-pilot — climate control, built-in dens, and durable, easy-clean interiors.

Built for You and Your Dog

For many travellers, an adventure isn't complete without a dog. But keeping a pet comfortable, clean, and safe on a long road trip takes more than tossing a dog bed in the back of a cargo van. Muddy paws, safety in motion, food storage, and temperature regulation are real day-to-day challenges off-grid. Reliable Campers builds dog-friendly camper vans designed to make travel seamless for both you and your co-pilot.

Whether you're heading out for a weekend hike or living on the road full-time, every layout is tailored to the size of your dog, your travel style, and the terrain you plan to explore.

    The Approach

    What Is a Dog-Friendly Build?

A dog-friendly camper van conversion is a vehicle designed from the ground up around the safety, comfort, and cleanliness of travelling with pets. Rather than treating pet accessories as an afterthought, we integrate dog-specific features directly into the cabinetry, plumbing, electrical, and climate control systems. The result is a highly functional layout where everything has a place, leaving the main walkway clear and clutter-free.

Travelling with a dog in a standard vehicle often means loose gear, unstable food bowls, and constant temperature worries. A pet-friendly conversion solves these with secure containment areas, automatic climate control, and claw-proof, easy-to-clean finishes.

By prioritizing your dog's needs during the design phase, we create a mobile basecamp that works for the whole family. You get a winter-insulated home, and your dog gets a cozy, familiar den that feels safe anywhere you park.

    What We Integrate

    Essential Pet-Friendly Features

Every dog is different — a Great Dane needs a completely different layout than a pair of small terriers. During your consultation we map out the features that make your trips easier. Here's what we build most often for dog owners.

Built-In Dog Crates and Sleeping Dens

A loose dog in a moving vehicle is a major safety hazard for both the pet and the passengers. To solve this, we design dog crates and sleeping dens directly into the van's cabinetry, most often using the open “garage” space beneath the rear platform bed. These dens are built with secure latching gates, structural framing, and cut ventilation panels for constant airflow.

By placing the crate under the bed or integrated into the bench seats, we keep your dog safe while keeping the central aisle clear. The den can be finished with soft, removable, washable padding — a familiar, enclosed space to relax after a long day outdoors.

Smart Climate Control and Temperature Monitoring

Canada's extreme weather means cabin temperatures can change rapidly. To keep your pet safe when you step away from the van, we install robust climate systems that operate completely off-grid. A fuel-fired heater tapped into the vehicle's fuel tank keeps the van warm on freezing nights without running the engine.

For warm weather, high-efficiency roof vent fans pull fresh air through the cabin, paired with cellular-enabled temperature monitors that sync to your phone. If the cabin rises above or drops below your pre-set limits, you get an immediate alert — peace of mind when leaving your dog behind.

Rear-Door Pet Wash and Spray Stations

One of the greatest challenges of van life with a dog is keeping the interior clean after a wet, muddy hike. We build washdown stations directly inside the rear doors, using the onboard fresh water tank and a high-pressure spray nozzle to rinse muddy paws, bellies, and sandy coats before your dog ever steps inside.

For cold weather, we can integrate a hydronic heating system for warm water, so a post-hike rinse is comfortable even in late autumn or early spring. The sprayer also doubles as a handy tool for cleaning boots, bikes, and dirty gear.

Slide-Out Feeding Drawers and Built-In Bowls

Loose food and water bowls are easily flipped, stepped on, or spilled while driving. We build feeding drawers into the toe-kicks of the lower cabinets, with recessed cutouts that hold stainless steel bowls securely in place.

At dinner time, slide the drawer out, then slide it back flush with the cabinetry when finished. For water, we can install splash-resistant bowls that prevent sloshing in motion — hydration on long drives without a mess on your floors.

    Durable, Scratch-Resistant Flooring

Camper van floors take a beating from mud, sand, water, and sharp dog claws. Standard residential flooring can scratch, warp, or bubble under constant moisture. We use only marine-grade woven vinyl or heavy-duty coin-grip rubber flooring in our pet-friendly builds.

These materials are waterproof, slip-resistant, and scratch-proof. Mud and dirt sweep or mop out in seconds, and the flooring is run up the walls slightly or sealed with high-grade silicone to keep moisture out of the subfloor — protecting the structure of your van.

    Safety Anchors and Harness Tie-Downs

For owners who prefer not to use a crate, we install heavy-duty L-track cargo rails or flush-mounted D-rings directly into the structural members of the van floor and walls. These tie-down points let you secure your dog's travel harness with a crash-tested safety tether while the vehicle is in motion.

Your dog can lie down comfortably on their favourite bed in the living area while staying safely restrained in the event of sudden braking or a collision. The L-track system is adjustable, so you can reposition the attachment points as your gear or seating changes over time.

Collapsible Dog Ramps and Safety Steps

Getting in and out of a high-roof van can be difficult for senior dogs, heavy breeds, or pets with joint issues. The constant impact of jumping down can cause long-term strain. We design storage cubbies sized to hold lightweight, telescoping, or folding dog ramps.

For side-door entry, we can also build wider, lower-profile safety steps integrated into the cabinetry, making the transition into the living space much gentler — so your dog can keep joining you on road trips comfortably as they age.

    Why Reliable Campers

Why Choose Us for Your Dog-Friendly Build?

Reliable Campers is a Calgary-based van builder focused on practical, durable, highly functional four-season conversions. We don't build delicate showpieces; we build rugged, reliable vehicles for real Canadian travel. We know a dog is a central part of that experience, and we bring the same attention to your pet's features as we do to your solar power and plumbing systems.

Every material, layout choice, and system we install is selected for durability — Baltic birch plywood for cabinetry, high-grade insulation for cabin quietness, and robust off-grid electrical systems. You're partnering with experienced builders who know what it takes to travel comfortably in extreme Canadian weather.

We build practical spaces that work day-to-day, so you spend less time managing gear and more time enjoying the destination with your dog.

    Choose Your Chassis

    Built on Three Premium Platforms

We build dog-friendly conversions on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Ford Transit, and RAM ProMaster. Each offers unique advantages in dimensions, drivetrain, and payload — and we adapt our floorplans to the chassis you choose.

    Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

144" and 170" wheelbases. Outstanding for long-distance travel and off-grid durability. The available AWD platform reaches remote trailheads, and the narrow body is highly maneuverable on winding forest roads.

    Ford Transit

Medium and high roof, including 350HD AWD. A slightly wider interior than the Sprinter, excellent for placing dog dens perpendicular to the walls. The EcoBoost engine and intelligent AWD provide strong power and traction.

    RAM ProMaster

136" and 159" wheelbases. The widest interior of the three, allowing transverse layouts. The front-wheel-drive configuration gives a lower floor — easier for older or smaller dogs to step inside without a ramp.

Already own a van? We can design a pet-friendly layout around your existing vehicle. We'll review its condition, dimensions, and weight capacity during the consultation to confirm it's a strong candidate.
